This guide was produced by the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa to address knowledge gaps regarding the criminal justice system. The guide encompasses all aspects of the criminal justice system: the South Africa Police Services, public prosecutors, judicial officers, the Department of Justice, the Department of Correctional Services and probation officers. The guide outlines each of these stakeholders’ role in the system. The guide informs survivors of crime, especially domestic violence and sexual offences, of the appropriate legal steps to take. It also explains the general process of the justice system, from laying a charge to appearance in court.
