This article looks at public perceptions of homosexuality and mirrors these with utterances by public figures like South African President Jacob Zuma. The author argues that these statements represent the ideas held by many South Africans, and these attitudes are behind the surge in violence against LGBTI people, especially the murders and rapes of lesbian women. Furthermore, the author considers social intolerance of difference, looking at xenophobia, violence against women and homophobic violence.
