Lesbian violence is a common occurrence, yet society renders lesbians – and thus their experience of violence – invisible. This article focuses on lesbian violence in the South African context. It unpacks the relationship between the police and survivors of domestic violence and highlights the similar manner in which the police and society at large treat domestic violence in homosexual relationships. The article looks at the work of the Lesbian and Gay Community and Health Centre in relation to the issue of domestic violence as well as the media’s treatment of lesbian violence.
